Questions

Which UK supermarket is cheapest?

In our latest weekly comparison of Tesco, Sainsbury's, ASDA and Morrisons, ASDA won the most categories: 13 of 16. ASDA won the most categories in all of the last 6 weekly reports.

How does MyGroceryPal compare supermarket prices?

Each week we take the price we recorded for every product at Tesco, Sainsbury's, ASDA and Morrisons on the Sunday, and keep only the products all four sold that week. Within each category those products make one basket per store, so every store is priced on exactly the same items, and a category only counts once its shared basket reaches 20 products. Loyalty-card prices such as Tesco Clubcard, Sainsbury's Nectar and Morrisons More Card prices count as the price.

Does this include Aldi and Lidl?

No. Aldi has too few products we can match like-for-like with the other four, though you can still compare individual Aldi prices on MyGroceryPal. For Lidl we only see its weekly offers, not its full price list, so it cannot be in a like-for-like basket either.

How do I find the cheapest supermarket for my own shop?

What you buy matters more than any average basket. Add your items to a MyGroceryPal basket and it prices every line at all 13 stores we track, names the store that wins on the total, and shows when splitting the shop across two or three stores saves more. It works on iOS, Android and the web.

Methodology

These figures come from the same weekly basket comparison as our price report. A store’s basket total is the sum of its prices for the products all four stores carried in that category, so the totals compare like with like but are not a typical weekly shop. This is a weekly snapshot: the retailer’s own site and the price at the checkout are authoritative. All weekly price reports.
